30 September 2022, 4-7 p.m. Sharper Night 2022

The Museum of Archaeology on the occasion of Researchers’ Night 2022, Friday 30 September 2022, 4-7 p.m., offers the event Digital Art and Manufacturing, Digital Restoration Workshop for Cultural Heritage. This is a training course for a professional figure capable of collaborating with both the traditional restorer and the archaeologist. Thanks to new technologies we will be able to create a virtual copy of the historical artefact to be used as the basis for the reconstruction of its original form. The result can be realised as a physical copy thanks to 3D printing, a resource now indispensable for Archaeology, Restoration and Cultural Heritage protection. The workflow is very similar to that used by restorers for the integration of a work or structure. The result will be a three-dimensional model representing the digitally restored original artefact, which can also be used in other contexts: inserted in a digital archive accessible to the public; placed in a virtual context for the scientific reconstruction of the historical landscape; 3D printed, a scale or life-size reproduction, – which, among many advantages, allows it to be manipulated without the danger of breaking the original artefact – making it suitable for multi-sensory paths and much more. Enter with this course into the world of 3D printing, organic modelling and 3D photogrammetry for archaeology and restoration: you will discover new perspectives to propose yourself as a technician for the 3D survey of cultural and environmental heritage. In addition to the technologies for stone cleaning, lasers and the Specim IQ hyperspectral camera, you will show the audience how to do state mapping and degradation imaging of a work of art. This will provide a unique opportunity to learn about the behind-the-scenes work of restoration. The workshop will be held by restorer Prof. Mario Colella and the Museum curator Dr. Anna Letizia Magrassi Matricardi will be present to illustrate the museum exhibits.
