Moving of the museum

After the last opening on Thursday, 14 December 2023, the renovation of the Museum of Archaeology’s spaces will begin. On Monday, 18 December, the move will take place, an imposing operation that will involve thousands of artefacts, placed in this prestigious location, the heart of the 15th-century San Matteo Hospital’s cross vault, back in 1957. At the time, the Rector, Plinio Fraccaro, chose this extraordinary exhibition space, which today, after 67 years, will undergo a major redevelopment by the University’s Technical Office.

Actually, the company Liguigli Fine Arts Service, with the authorisation of the Superintendence of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for the provinces of Como, Lecco, Monza-Brianza, Pavia, Sondrio and Varese, was entrusted with carrying out the delicate removal operations.

Furthermore, Filippo Ticozzi of Officine creative, a production workshop for the visual and performing arts at the University of Pavia, is making a documentary about the work.

Therefore, the Museum will be closed until a later date. The Technical Area is planning a couple of years for the renovation of the extraordinary Baroque dome and the restoration of the four sections of the 15th-century wooden ceiling. Although the Museum will be closed the activities will not be suspended: after the move at the end of January 2024, we will focus on the enhancement of the Loggetta Sforzesca with its Renaissance artefacts, the Museum’s Monetarium and the Lapidarium with many classical artefacts that are still little known.
