Maurizio Harari, Director of the Museum of Archaeology of the Sistema Museale d’Ateneo di Pavia (www.archeologia.unipv.eu) will present on Tuesday 4 May 2021, at 21.00, an online conference entitled Alla scoperta delle mummie di Pavia (Discovering the mummies of Pavia), with speaker Sabina Malgora, Egyptologist and archaeologist. It will open a window on the history and society of Ancient Egypt from the comfort of your own home.
The title of the conference anticipates a fascinating theme for young and old: the protagonists will be the two mummies preserved at the Museum of Archaeology, of which Maurizio Harari is the director, professor of Etruscology and Italic Archaeology and curator Anna Letizia Magrassi Matricardi.
The speaker will talk about the studies and discoveries made on the mummies during two restoration and enhancement projects commissioned by the Museum of Archaeology with the support of the Lombardy Region, and entrusted to the research centre Mummy Project (www.mummyproject.it). The research carried out in recent years has led to a deeper understanding of the exhibits in the Museum’s Egyptian collection, which is displayed in the Egyptian Corner.
The Egyptian Corner is part of a museum of rare beauty, taking visitors far into time and space, including through the other collections, such as the Etruscan and Roman collections and the Gipsoteca. In recent years, thanks to its curator who has carried out a complete reorganisation of the Museum, and thanks to modern research carried out on the exhibits, continuous opening, events, restorations, educational activities offered and participation in conferences, the Museum has become a dynamic and lively reality. It deserves a visit as soon as possible!
Sabina Malgora’s lecture is part of this new climate, which in the face of the pandemic finds ways of bringing the Museum closer to the people.
The mummies were carefully investigated with CT scans carried out by the team of Fabrizio Calliada, director of the Department of Radiology at the Policlinico San Matteo in Pavia. Subsequent microscopic and molecular analyses of the tissues involved laboratories and specialists coordinated by the Mummy Project.
The research made it possible to learn more about the mummified individuals and to reconstruct their faces. Thanks to the reconstruction of the anthropological profile by Chantal Milani and Jonathan Elias, it has been confirmed that the complete mummy belongs to a young woman, aged between 20 and 22 years, of slim build, with a height of 141.5-148.5 cm, who lived in Egypt in the 3rd century BC; while the mummified head belongs to a young man, who lived in Egypt in the 1st century AD, in Roman times, i.e. after 30 BC, when the land of the Nile became a province of Rome with Augustus.
