The Museum of Archaeology turns 200: opening to the public and guided tour on Saturday 18 January 2020

1820-2020, the Museum of Archaeology at the University of Pavia celebrates its 200th anniversary. In 1818 Pietro Vittorio Aldini took part in the competition for the first chair of Archaeology at the University of Pavia, with the name of Chair of Archaeology, Numismatics, Diplomatics and Heraldry. Aldini was called up and took up his post the following year. In 1820 he immediately set up, under the name of Gabinetto di antiquaria, a collection of ancient artefacts for educational use, the present-day Museum of Archaeology, one of the oldest university archaeological collections in Italy.

The Museum exhibits different classes of materials, representative of various civilisations and eras, from prehistory to late antiquity, in keeping with the didactic-scientific principle established from the outset by its founder.
Who was Aldini? What were the first locations of the Museum? What were the first exhibits to be acquired? How was the collection expanded?

On the occasion of the bicentennial, if you want to know the history of the Museum and its founder and more information about the exhibits on display to the public, we look forward to seeing you on Saturday 18 January 2020 for an afternoon at the Museum. The Museum will be open from 3.30 p.m. to 6.30 p.m., with a free guided tour at 4.30 p.m. There is a charge for admission.
