Extraordinary opening of the Museum of Archaeology of the Pavia University Museum System: Saturday 18 November 2023, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
FINISSAGE OF ALEX PINNA’S EXHIBITION WITH PRESENTATION OF THE CATALOGUE AND A WELCOME TO THE MUSEUM PUBLIC BEFORE CLOSING, at the Museum at 4 pm.
Saturday 18 November at 4 p.m. there will be the finissage of Alex Pinna’s solo exhibition with presentation of the Catalogue. It will also be an opportunity to greet the public in view of the Museum’s closure for two years. Indeed, the precious architectural container that houses the collections, the cross vault of the ancient San Matteo Hospital, will undergo a major restoration project conducted by the University’s Technical Department.
From 7 October to 18 November 2023, the Museum of Archaeology of the University of Pavia hosted Time, a solo exhibition by Alex Pinna, Artist and Lecturer in Sculpture at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan, curated by Vittorio Schieroni, Contemporary Art Critic and Curator, Anna Letizia Magrassi Matricardi, Museum Curator, and Paolo Campiglio, Lecturer in Contemporary Art History at the University’s Department of Humanities. Initiative under the Patronage of the Municipality of Pavia.
Overall, a selection of sculptures by Alex Pinna dialogued with archaeological artefacts from different periods of history and representative of different civilisations of the Mediterranean basin. In the spaces of the Museum and the Art History Library of the Athenaeum, the exhibition was articulated through references and analogies, contrasts and harmonic juxtapositions in a tight interaction between ancient and contemporary. As a matter of fact, Pinna’s subjects represent with delicate poetry the presence of the human being in the inner, social and environmental context in which he finds himself living in solitude or together with his peers. Stylised figures, leaf-men, boxers, pinocchios are depictions of a being in the world, sometimes fragile and in precarious equilibrium, in which one can easily recognise oneself, thanks to the absence of features, characters that take shape through skilful work with materials such as bronze, white resin and knotted rope or that are sketched on paper with a sure and quick hand.
Furthermore, the exhibition was part of the Art Meetings organised by the Museum of Archaeology, which kicked off in 2018, with the aim of involving a number of artists in a dialogue with the evocative spaces of the Museum and the precious artefacts it houses. The series of meetings, curated by Anna Letizia Magrassi Matricardi and Paolo Campiglio, under the supervision of the Museum’s Director, Maurizio Harari, is an opportunity for the University and the world of contemporary creativity to meet.
Time was presented to the public on Saturday 7 October at 4 p.m. to coincide with the 19th Day of Contemporary Art promoted by AMACI – Association of Italian Contemporary Art Museums. On Wednesday 4 October at 6 p.m., in the hall of the former Art Library, recently renovated and reopened to the public, a preview of the artist’s graphic works (drawings and sketches) was presented, which complemented the itinerary through the spaces of the Museum of Archaeology.
The exhibition organisers would like to thank the collector Fabrizio Somaschini and the Allianz Pavia Agency Vincenzo Tambone – Andrea Sampietro (Corso Cavour 8, Pavia – tel. +39.0382.22332 – vincenzotambone@tambonesampietro.it) for contributing to the realisation of the initiative.
