Online presentation of virtual autopsies of mummies from the Museum of Archaeology of the University of Pavia

Prof. Maurizio Harari, Director of the Museum of Archaeology of the University Museum System of Pavia (www.archeologia.unipv.eu/), on Tuesday 11 May 2021, at 9 p.m., will present online the videos illustrating through virtual autopsies the two Egyptian mummies preserved in the Egyptian corner of the Museum. The mummies were at the centre of two restoration and enhancement projects commissioned by the Museum of Archaeology with the support of the Lombardy Region, and entrusted to the research centre Mummy Project (www.mummyproject.it) between 2015 and 2018.

Thanks to 3D reconstructions made using CT scan data, enriched by the results of anthropological studies and analyses carried out, it will be possible to see inside the mummies with the same eyes as the researchers. In technical jargon, this is called ‘Fly Through’, meaning that you fly through the mummies and see many details. There is nothing macabre or scary about it, but it is a fascinating journey and the little ones, but not only them, will feel like real Egyptologists and anthropologists. The videos will reveal the physical characteristics and some details of the life and death of these two mummified people: a young woman, aged between 20 and 22, with a height of 141.5-148.5 cm, who lived in Egypt in the 3rd century B.C., whose mummy is intact, but has been removed, and a young man, of whom only the head is preserved, who lived in Egypt in Roman times, i.e. after 30 B.C., when the land of the Nile became a province of Rome with Augustus.

The video was made by Roberto Poli, videomaker, and Sabina Malgora, director of the Mummy Project, who will act as hostess on this journey to the centre of the mummies.

The event will be introduced by the Director of the Museum of Archaeology, Maurizio Harari, professor of Etruscology and Italic Archaeology.

The full version of the videos will then be shown in the Museum and the short versions will be available on the Museum’s website and social pages. Virtual autopsies of mummies are now innovative proposals visible in many important museums such as the British Museum and the Egyptian Museum in Turin.
